A powerful windstorm knocked down trees and power lines, scattering debris across Metro Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast overnight.

At the peak of the storm more than 10,000 properties were without power, mostly on the North Shore and in Burnaby.

On its website BC Hydro says it expected power to be completely restored by 10 a.m., but just 500 properties were still in the dark by 8 a.m.

In West Vancouver, a 30-metre tree crashed down near Jefferson Avenue and 13th Street, and another tree smashed into a light pole in North Vancouver.

It's not bevelived anyone was injured during the storm.
