Though a Burnaby neighbourhood was awoken by gunfire Sunday morning, the victim is nowhere to be found.

Police responded to reports of gunshots on Carleton Avenue around 5:30 a.m. where they found shell casings from a handgun outside a home.

The two men believed to be involved were arrested at the scene.

Police said the men opened fire from inside the house and may have been targeting someone on the lawn. They think the person was hit but could not find them.

“One of the males that [was] taken into custody did have some blood on his shirt that he was wearing although he wasn’t injured … it is leading us to believe that someone was injured here,” said RCMP Insp. Brian Massie.

“We've alerted area hospitals in the event someone should come in with any type of injury that could be related to a gunshot wound,” Massie said.

RCMP said the shooting does not appear to be a home invasion and there is no apparent threat to the public.

One of the men who was arrested is known to police.
