One of Canada’s largest pharmacy chains is apologizing after a Vancouver store owner posted a help wanted ad calling for unpaid workers.

The Craigslist posting asked for “energetic, motivated volunteers” to help set up the pharmacy and help out around the store, a new location opening on West 57th Avenue.

The volunteers would not get paid, according to the ad, but would be provided with “resume-boosting activities and an opportunity for a great reference letter.”

Future employment in the pharmacy was possible, according to the ad.

After bringing the ad to the attention of the company’s head office, the CEO for Pharmasave Drugs (Pacific) Ltd. said it was not aware the owner had posted the ad.

Greg Shepherd said each of Pharmasave’s 400 Canadian stores are independently owned and operated and the posting has now been removed.

“We have contacted the owner and advised them to remove the portion pertaining to volunteers interested in job shadowing and learning about the pharmacy profession and leave only the existing recruitment ads for the remaining positions which were posted already,” Shepherd wrote in an email to CTV Vancouver.
