One person is dead and another seriously injured after a small plane crashed in southern B.C.

The Cessna 172 was departing the Crawford Bay Airport in the Kootenays on Saturday night when it crashed near the Kokanee Springs Golf Course.

Paul Hindson, general manager of the nearby Kokanee Chalets, says he was heading out to play tennis when he heard the plane hit the ground.

Hindson says he and a few others ran toward the plane to help and saw the pilot moving and breathing but found a female passenger dead.

RCMP have confirmed one person died in the crash and say the pilot suffered burns and was taken to hospital.
