The ugly Christmas sweater has become a holiday tradition for many, with some costing as much as $100. But why spend big bucks when you can make your own ugly Christmas sweater for under $10?

The ugly sweaters have become even more popular this year with major retailers and professional sports teams, like the Vancouver Canucks, cashing in on the trend.

Consumer reporter Lynda Steele decided to try creating her own version of the new Christmas classic and visited Value Village to get a lesson in crafting a hideous holiday sweater on the cheap.

“I don’t know how many times a day we get asked if we have tacky sweaters,” said Lina da Costa of Value Village.

You can either buy a sweater pre-made off the rack or grab a glue gun, some Christmas baubles and garland, and make your own.

"I think it's fantastic and I'm going to make them for everybody in my family this year and post it on Facebook, you know, just to embarrass them," said Christmas sweater fan Lori-Ann Podd.

The sweaters sell for as little as $7.99. The garland, beads and baubles you can supply yourself or also buy them at Value Village.

All in, the sweaters Steele made cost under $10 and took just 15 minutes to make.
