A North Vancouver high school teacher is set to appear in court next month over accusations he sexually assaulted a student for more than two years.

RCMP say Chad Jeremy Smith assaulted the female Argyle Secondary School student from October 2012 to December 2014.

The 39-year-old from Langley was arrested Thursday and is charged with one count of sexual exploitation, the charge given to an authority figure who allegedly sexually assaults a minor.

He was released from custody and is his first court appearance is slated for Sept. 9.

The North Vancouver School District says Smith, who has worked at the school since 2005, was placed on suspension without pay following his arrest and he will remain suspended throughout court proceedings.

“This is the School District’s standard procedure when charges of this kind are laid against an employee and reflects the Board’s paramount concern for student safety and wellbeing,” a spokesperson said in a statement sent to CTV Vancouver.

The district says it is cooperating with Mounties in the investigation and won’t comment on the allegations against one of its staff now that the matter is before the courts.
