The owner of a Pomeranian that had to receive veterinary care after ingesting an unknown drug will not face charges, according to the BC SPCA

The incident happened in August. The dog’s owner contacted an animal hospital saying she was concerned it had possibly eaten drugs, sparking an SPCA investigation.

“Whether it was marijuana or cocaine, it was one sick little dog,” said BC SPCA spokeswoman Marcie Moriarty. “There was no evidence to support that the dog was purposely given drugs. The owner had indicated there might have been people who had done drugs in the residence where she was living.”

The dog has since recovered and was returned to its original owner on the condition that it no longer lives in the residence where the drugs were consumed.

Moriarty said cases of pets ingesting narcotics are frequent in the Lower Mainland, but SPCA officials don’t get involved unless there is suspicion the animal was purposely given drugs or the owner does not seek veterinary treatment.

Officials concluded the Pomeranian accidentally ate the drugs and charges will not be pursued, she said.
