A new hire at the New Westminster Police Department has been suspended from duty over an alleged domestic violence incident.

Vancouver police arrested probationary constable David Te on Sept. 4, before he’d worked any shifts in New Westminster but after he was sworn in as an officer in the city.

Charges of assault, mischief and uttering threats were approved against him a week later.

“While this individual is entitled to due process and a presumption of innocence, we are extremely disappointed that an officer we had only recently hired was arrested and is now facing criminal charges,” New Westminster police said in a statement.

Chief Const. Dave Jones suspended Te, who has three years’ experience at another police force, and alerted the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner immediately after learning about the allegations, according to the department.

Te’s status as a probationary constable in New Westminster is also under review.

The department said it will not provide further information on the case while it is before the courts.
