A 21-year-old man was shot in the face while confronting suspects in a violent home invasion in Surrey early Tuesday, according to police.

Witnesses told police a group of five masked men broke into the basement suite of a home on 146A Street at 76B Street around 1 a.m., police said.

The intruders reportedly tied up the man living in the suite.

A neighbour then confronted the intruders on their way out of the house and that’s when shots were fired, with a bullet striking the victim in the face, according to police.

The man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“I come outside and then there was a younger man who was probably in his 20s, he looked really shook up, kind of having a hard time breathing,” said Justin Dolan. “He asked me who I was and what I was doing here, I told him I was the neighbour, I asked him if he was okay and he told me to get out of here and ran back inside.”

Another neighbour said he heard the commotion from inside his house.

“Before I go down, I hear a guy in the middle of the road yelling, ‘Where’s my brother? Where’s my brother?’” he said.

Police said the man who was shot was not the intended target of the home invasion.

Police said the victim of the home invasion is known to them.

The invasion was a targeted incident, according to officials. Police said the incident was not related to gang activity. No arrests have been made.
