Victoria police say a 39-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with the stabbing of a 15-year-old boy earlier this week.

Justin Wayne Wendland was stabbed in the chest in the city's downtown core at about 8 p.m. Thursday night, Sgt. Grant Hamilton said. The youth was found in the 2600-block of Douglas Street and rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"It's just shocking for the city," Hamilton said. "That hits close to home for a lot of us who have children."

Shortly after the stabbing, a man entered the Victoria Police Department and turned himself in.

Cory Daniel Barry has been charged with murder and will be in custody until a bail hearing on Monday morning.

Officers spent Friday searching the area around the stabbing for evidence, and recovered a weapon that may have been used in the attack, Hamilton said.

Police are asking anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time of the stabbing to contact the Victoria police tip line at 250-995-7444 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
