Surrey RCMP has confirmed officers opened fire Friday afternoon after a suspect vehicle allegedly rammed two police cars.

Plainclothes officers were pulling the vehicle over on Hall Road around 12:30 p.m. when the driver tried to make an escape, according to Mounties.

“The suspect vehicle struck two police vehicles in an attempt to flee the area,” the RCMP said in a release.

Witnesses told CTV News they heard three to five shots ring out in the area.

The RCMP confirmed shots were fired by officers, but said none of the bullets struck anyone. Two Mounties and a suspect did suffer non-life threatening injures in the incident, and were taken to hospital.

Three people from the suspect vehicle – two men and a woman – were also arrested.

The Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit is continuing to investigate.

B.C.’s police watchdog, the Independent Investigations Office, was notified of the shooting but is not probing the incident.

Anyone with information on the case who hasn’t spoken to police is asked to call the RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
