VANCOUVER -- A psychiatrist will assess the mental health of a Vancouver woman before she is sentenced for killing her two newborn babies.
Lawyers in B.C. Supreme Court agreed that a psychiatric report and pre-sentencing report should be done for Sarah Leung, who was scheduled to be sentenced Monday.
The 28-year-old woman was convicted last week of two counts of infanticide, rather than second-degree murder, in the deaths of her infant boys -- the first in April 2009 and the second in March 2010.
Leung's lawyer had argued that his client was so terrified of being disowned by her family that she hid her pregnancies and disposed of the babies' bodies after secretly giving birth.
Police were called after Leung's father found the first child in a plastic bag placed in the garbage can outside the family's home.
The conviction of infanticide means that a mother caused the death of her newborn when she has not fully recovered from giving birth and is mentally disturbed.
Leung's sentencing hearing has now been scheduled for June 19.
