Metro Vancouver voters are in no rush to cast their transit referendum ballots, according to an interim report from Elections BC.
Only 63,000 of the more than 1.5 million registered voters in the region, which amounts to roughly four per cent, have returned their voting packages so far, the agency revealed Wednesday.
On top of that, only Vancouver and Surrey residents have apparently bothered to return them up to this point.
Elections BC has received 54,000 ballots from Vancouver’s 414,000 registered voters and 9,000 from Surrey’s 294,000 voters, amounting to 13 per cent and three per cent, respectively.
The agency said people in those cities were first to receive their voting packages, whereas many other Metro Vancouver voters may not have received their ballots in the mail until late last week.
There’s still nearly two months left to vote, and in past referendums almost three-quarters of ballots came in within the last two weeks.
Elections BC said it will be reporting on interim ballots returns on a weekly basis until the voting period closes on May 29.
