A Vancouver Island teen found guilty of child pornography for sexting has been given a conditional discharge.

The girl, who was 16 at the time and cannot be named because she was convicted under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, sent nude images of her boyfriend’s former girlfriend over Facebook. The child pornography charges were laid because the subject of the images was also a minor.

Crown prosecutors warned teens to be careful of who takes their picture – and where those images may eventually end up – after the guilty verdict in January 2014.

The unnamed teen was also found guilty of uttering threats for threatening the other teen if she came to her Victoria-area high school.

Outside court on Monday, the teen’s lawyer told reporters that his client won’t technically have a criminal record if she fulfills her conditions in the next few months.

The teen wants to appeal the conviction, according to her lawyer.
