A rural Ontario theatre company is searching for an "excellent singer" with a physical resemblance to Terry Fox, to star in a musical about the beloved Canadian icon.

The minds behind "Marathon of Hope: The Musical, The Terry Fox Story" are searching for an actor to play the show's titular character at a small-town playhouse.

The musical will run from Oct. 5 to 30 in St. Jacobs, Ont., a rural township located approximately 120 kilometres west of Toronto.

The casting call, issued by Drayton Entertainment, asks for video auditions for the show's lead role.

"The role requires an exceptional actor who must be able to effectively portray Terry as an ordinary Canadian university student who encounters extraordinary circumstances," the call reads.

"He must also capture Terry's essence as an athletic adventurer and compelling storyteller, with boundless energy and determination."

The exact plot of the show has not been revealed, but the casting call suggests it will cover Fox's time at Simon Fraser University, his cancer diagnosis, his run across eastern Canada and his death in New Westminster at age 22.

The show's creators are looking for a man in his early 20s, and would prefer an applicant with some resemblance to the runner.

Anyone interested in the role is asked to learn the "Terry Audition Medley," then record themselves singing the song.

Lyrics to the song include: "I wanna be happy when I wake up in bed. I'm tired of running from dreams in my head."

Once recorded, the videos should be uploaded to YouTube, then submitted along with a photo using the form online.

The deadline is May 20.
