A murder suspect who eluded Vancouver police for weeks was nabbed while riding a bike down Broadway – just blocks from police headquarters.

Officers spotted 42-year-old Daniel Paul cycling on the busy thoroughfare shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday and arrested him without incident, ending a lengthy search that extended beyond Metro Vancouver into Washington state.

“It would be fair to say we had thousands of police officers looking,” Sgt. Randy Fincham said.

“We’re happy to say that he’s in custody now.”

Police have been on a manhunt for the suspect since his girlfriend Rose Paul, a 36-year-old mother-of-five, was found dead in his East Vancouver home on March 3.

Her death marked the city’s third homicide of the year.

During the search for Paul, authorities announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. Fincham thanked the public for all the tips they received about his potential whereabouts, which pointed investigators toward Chilliwack, Squamish, and even south of the border.

“All of those tips were thoroughly exhausted,” Fincham said, adding that police are still trying to piece together where Paul’s been for the last month.

“We do believe it’s possible he was living locally. We don’t believe at this point that he was being assisted by anybody.”

No charges have been laid against the suspect, but Fincham said now that he’s in custody, police will be working with Crown counsel to ensure he stays there.
