The hotel stay can be one of the biggest vacation expenses and if you’re staying downtown or in a touristy area, you’re likely to pay top dollar. But there are several ways to get a better deal and extra perks.

Tip #1 – Book direct

Before you click to book a room on a travel websites, call the hotel directly and ask them to match the price online.

"Not a lot of people know that these hotels are paying a hefty commission, it's usually 20 plus per cent to sites like Travelocity. So it's really worth it to just call," said personal finance expert Katie Dunsworth-Reiach.

Tip #2 – Start a bidding war

Get rates at a handful of nearby hotels, and then ask the one you like the best if they'll beat the lowest price.

Tip #3 – Loyalty cards

Loyalty has its rewards. So sign up for a free hotel membership card.

"Right away you're going to get the perks like the free Wi-Fi and the free newspaper in the mornings and possibly some discounts for a spa treatment or something like that," said Allison Wallace of Flight Centre.

Tip #4 – Stay midweek

Your weekend away will cost significantly less if you don't actually go on a weekend.

Tip #5 – Discount longer stays

If you're staying more than three nights you're more than entitled to request a discounted rate.

Tip #6 – Social media

Follow your favourite hotels online.

"Social media is often monitored by our concierge, so if there are things you're talking about in your feed about liking red wine, liking ice cream, we're going to try to get to know our customers," said Kyle Matheson of the Sutton Place Hotel.

Tip #7 – Ask for an upgrade

Want a premium room at discount prices?  Try asking for an upgrade. Be polite and dress the part.

You’re also more likely to get a free upgrade if you check in after 5:00 p.m.

Tip #8 – Don’t be picky

Instead of demanding a king or two queens, keep your bed preferences open. You'll have more options for both price and upgrades.

Tip #9 – Announce special occasions

If you want to be treated like a VIP, let staff know you’re celebrating a special occasion. Tell the booking agent over the phone, or if you’re booking online add special comments that it’s an anniversary or a girl’s weekend.

Tip #10 – Just ask

It may sound simple, but sometimes it works. It’s at the hotel’s discretion so you have to be prepared to accept it or walk away if you’re not happy with the price.

And finally, be flexible when it comes to where you stay. If you book a hotel on the outskirts of a city, but near transit, you can save as much as 30 per cent. You also won’t pay a premium for hotel parking like you would at a downtown hotel.
