One of the victims in Tuesday’s stabbing and shooting incident in Maple Ridge has died, and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken on the case.

The deceased has been identified as 29-year-old Louie Sparvier. Another victim remains in critical condition and was not identified in IHIT’s release on the incident.

Ridge Meadows RCMP confirmed Tuesday that one man was shot and another was stabbed in the incident, which took place on Laity Street near Lougheed Highway. Emergency calls started coming in at around 8:15 a.m. as local students walked to school through the neighbourhood.

Area residents told CTV News that the incident was “upsetting,” and left them “shocked,” and “scared to go out.”

One witness said a nurse stopped to help one of the victims. Others said they heard shouting Monday night and awoke to police banging on doors the next morning.

Police say they believe the participants in the conflict knew each other, and that the incident was not a random attack.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the IHIT tip line at 877-551-4448 or Crimestoppers at 800-222-8477.
