An amonia leak caused crews to shut down the Lougheed Highway in Mission early Friday morning.

Hazmat teams were called to the 'significant' leak at a frozen food processing facility.

It came from a valve at BC Frozen Foods but the contaminants outside of the plant was deemed 'insignificant'.

"It does pose a danger because it is a health hazard obviously if it's injested in any type of concentration. It also can be a fire hazard as well," said Insp. Bryon Massie with the Lower Mainland District RCMP.

There was some concern of the contaminants getting into the Fraser River but it appears the river was spared.
