Grilling season is gearing up and testers at Consumer Reports are busy putting gas grills through some tough temperature tests.

For starters, testers measure how hot the grill is after 10 minutes, your typical pre-heat time. They also look at how even the heat is across the cooking surface and how well a grill can hand the task of indirect heating, which is the low temperature needed to slow cook things like ribs.

The results show you may want to reconsider how big a grill you buy.

The $2,999.99 Napolean Prestige Pro 665 RSIB is the only large gas grill that earned a recommendation.

Consumer Reports says you’ll actually get more bang for your buck with a recommended mid-size grill.

“Our tests find that grills in that mid-size range can typically hold about 18-28 burgers at once. Thats plenty of space to cook for a crowd,” said Sara Morrow of Consumer Reports.

The Nexgrill 720 0830H from Home Depot costs $398. It’s ready to grill in 10 minutes and holds an even temperature.

And if you’re short on space consider the smaller $549 Weber Spirit E-210, it reaches high cooking temperatures quickly and heats up evenly across the grill.

If you’re a fan of charcoal grilling Consumer Reports also took a look at the 18-inch Weber Kettle grill. For about $109 you get even heating and a good choice for grilling up basics like burgers and hot dogs.
