Severe rainfall triggered flash flooding in Kamloops Tuesday afternoon, forcing residents of a local trailer park out of their homes.

The rain and hail, which was falling so hard at one point it was setting off car alarms, flooded streets and left up to one metre of water in some resident’s backyards.

It also sent muddy water rushing into Oak Hills Trailer Park, and Mounties were dispatched to evacuate the area. At one point thousands of residents were without power.

The cause of the flooding is unclear, but the utilities manager for Kamloops suggested a blocked outfall is to blame.

No injuries have been reported.

The city opened an emergency operations centre at Interior Savings Centre Parkside Lounge and has asked all evacuated residents to register there.
