A fire in a difficult-to-reach area near the former Buntzen powerhouse near Indian Arm may have been started by campers, nearby residents tell CTV News.

The blaze began next to an abandoned building near the power station sometime before 11 a.m. Saturday.

Two firefighting helicopters from Coastal Fire Centre could be seen battling the fire shortly after noon. It did not appear to be under control, but a spokeswoman from BC Hydro said the crews are making progress.

A sign at nearby Buntzen Lake Recreational Area read “closed for the day due to forest fire.”

The BC Hydro spokeswoman said the closure was due to the large number of cars in the parking lot, and the need to ensure that emergency vehicles can access it if they need to.

The blaze itself is not near trails, so there are no public safety concerns at this time, she said.
