The Ministry of Transportation can’t say how long it will take to repair part of Highway 99 in Richmond that caved in Tuesday morning.

The problem, caused by a culvert collapse under the road, was first reported to RCMP as a pothole south of the Oak Street Bridge around 8 a.m.

The pothole grew, however, and eventually caused the northbound slow lane to buckle by the Bridgeport Road off-ramp.

It’s unclear what caused the culvert failure.

Northbound traffic was limited to a single lane for several hours while engineers assessed the damage and risk potential, causing lengthy delays for drivers, but a temporary second lane was finally opened up around 5 p.m.

The ministry said it could take days or even weeks to fix.
