A police cruiser was struck by gunfire in a tense standoff in Mission Thursday.

Officers were called to Best Avenue near Cedar Street at around 9 p.m. after hearing reports of shots fired in the area.

A suspect opened fire and the Mounties quickly took cover, according to police. One shot struck a police vehicle, leaving a bullet hole near the back right window.

Members of the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team were called in, and a suspect surrendered to officers without further incident, police said Friday.

Not much is known about exactly what transpired, but a cruiser at the scene remained behind police tape for much of Friday.

Neighbours said they were surprised to hear about the standoff because the neighbourhood is relatively quiet.

“My mom called me and she said ‘don’t be scared, but there were gunshots,’” area resident Kelly Toor told CTV News. Toor said it was “unsettling” to hear about the incident because “our neighbourhood’s really nice and nothing else has ever happened before.”

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team was called in by RCMP to investigate the incident for reasons that are not currently clear.

IHIT says there were “no victims” in the incident, and is releasing little other information, including whether their investigation is related to an existing murder probe.

Police say they’re not releasing any other information for now.
