It may not come as a surprise to those living here, but a new study says British Columbia residents are the most active people in the country.

The study by Ipsos Reid and the Canadian Sporting Goods Association found that 86 per cent of all B.C. households engage in fitness or play sports.

It also found that British Columbians were most likely to walk for exercise, with 56 per cent of households taking part.

Nearly one-in-five B.C. households also participate in swimming, according to the study, while only one out of every ten Quebec residents swim for exercise.

Quebecers were revealed to be the least active province, with 77 per cent of households engaging in sports or fitness.

The study was based on interviews conducted with more than 16,500 households across Canada.
