An Abbotsford teen is fighting for his life in hospital after being struck by a car so hard that he caved in the passenger side windshield, according to witnesses.

An Abbotsford police dog handler came across the 18-year-old victim on Old Yale near McClure Road at around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday.

He was suffering from severe injuries after being struck by a small, black vehicle and was airlifted to a Vancouver-area hospital in life-threatening condition, according to Const. Paul Walker.

The female driver of the vehicle remained on scene and is cooperating with police, Walker said.

Walker urged caution to drivers as fall and winter conditions make roads more dangerous.

“We have very dark hours in the morning in commuter traffic where we typically would see light. We’re going through that time change,” he said. “With the rain and the darkness we’re appealing to drivers to slow down and obviously be observant of the pedestrian crosswalks and cyclists that are on the roadway.”

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them.
