A suspected arson at a Delta, B.C., elementary school has caused an estimated $100,000 in damage.

Delta Police say that figure does not include extensive smoke and water damage.

Crews arrived just after 2 a.m. after receiving a 911 call and found a fire burning against a wall of Sunshine Hills Elementary School.

"It definitely had some logs or something put up against the building," said Battalion Chief Mike Richardson. "I would suspect arson in this case."

Although the blaze started outside, it quickly spread into the school through the wall.

Delta Fire Department had six trucks fighting the fire, and say it was tricky to put out the fire because it spread into the ceiling.

Firefighters used saws to cut through the metal roof and get at the flames and find any hot spots.

At least one classroom has been badly damaged and there is smoke and water damage in other parts of the school.

No one was injured and the cause of the blaze in still unknown.
