MONTREAL - The Montreal Impact are headed to Major League Soccer.

MLS has announced that the Impact will become the league's 19th team in 2012.

The Impact currently plays in the U.S. Soccer Federation D-2 Pro League.

The team will be owned by the Saputo family, which currently manages the Impact and built the team's 13,000-seat stadium in 2008. Saputo Stadium will be expanded to about 20,000 seats thanks to $23 million in funding, announced Quebec finance minister Raymond Bachand.

Toronto FC joined MLS in 2007 and Vancouver is slated to start play in 2011.

MLS started with 10 teams in 1996 but has expanded several times in recent years.
