Two hikers who spent the night unprepared and lost near Lions Bay managed to find their way out of the woods early Tues.

The man and woman, in their 20s, somehow became separated from a wedding party on Howe Sound Crest Trail late Monday afternoon.

"They were last seen at Mount Unnecessary," said Jeff Yarnold with North Shore Rescue. "They had no lights, no map, no GPS and are unfamiliar with the area."

The hikers did not have a cellphone, making it difficult for rescuers to establish contact.

About 15 crew members searched overnight and a helicopter joined the effort early in the morning.

The couple, who was visiting from New York, missed their flight home.
