The family of a missing 66-year-old Burnaby woman known to collect cans and pick mushrooms is growing desperate for a sign of her whereabouts.

The last confirmed sighting of Gui Feng Tong was last Thursday, when a surveillance camera caught the senior leaving home in the Salish Court area.

Her son Scott Zhou and daughter-in-law Nancy Liao haven’t heard from her since, and took to canvassing local businesses Wednesday for clues.

The couple told CTV News they’re growing more worried by the day about Tong, who is five-feet-tall, weighs just 100 lbs. and speaks only Mandarin.

“I feel sorry,” Zhou said, breaking into tears. “I’m the only son here to take care of her but I cannot find her. If anyone saw her, give [police] a call.”

“We want her to be safe out there and wish she comes back safely,” said Liao.

Mounties say Tong’s disappearance is out of character, and that she doesn’t take prescription medication or have any known health issues.

“This is highly unusual for her,” Cpl. David Reid said. “Her son and daughter have checked with all friends they are aware of with no results.”

“Obviously, if this woman’s been missing for the last five days we are in an emergency situation.”

One liquor store employee told CTV News that Tong stops by daily to return bottles, but didn’t come in over the weekend. He believes he saw her on Friday, however, which would mark her most recent sighting.

Police and search and rescue crews have also been scouring a wooded area in the Burnaby Moutnain Conservation Area along North Road, where she is believed to pick mushrooms, but have yet to find a promising lead.

Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to call the Burnaby RCMP detachment immediately at 604-294-7922.
