A chemical fire that broke out at Port Metro Vancouver last month, sending huge plumes of toxic smoke over the city, has been deemed an accident.

Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services said Wednesday that it’s concluded its investigation into the March 4 blaze and found no indication of tampering on the shipping container where it started.

The customs seals on the outside of the container were all in place, according to the probe.

The investigation wasn’t able to determine the cause of the fire, however.

Firefighters said extensive damage done to the inside of the container made it impossible to pinpoint what made the chemicals ignite.

Authorities identified the chemicals as trichloroisocyanuric acid, a compound often used in swimming pools.
