A man charged with second-degree murder in his mother's death has been found not criminally responsible.

David Siu was charged after his mother was stabbed 373 times in an East Vancouver apartment in 2014. Siu was also charged with the attempted murder of his 19-month-old niece who was in his mother's care at the time.

His mother, 63-year-old Yin Nor Hsao, was found with serious injuries but died a short time later. The toddler survived, but police called her injuries "life altering" at the time.

Siu was found by police at the scene, and was shot by officers when they said he appeared to lunge at them.

More than two years after the attacks, the court ruled that Siu was suffering a mental disorder at the time. He has a history of schizophrenia.
