A Penticton man who repeatedly raped a young mother in front of her child could spend the rest of his life behind bars.
David Wesley Bobbitt was declared a dangerous offender in B.C. Supreme Court Friday and handed an indeterminate jail sentence.
Judge Peter Rogers described the 39-year-old as “the very definition of a psychopath with no empathy for his victims.”
Bobbitt pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault and six other charges stemming from the horrific attack, which took place in his second-hand store in July 2011.
The court heard he struck his 22-year-old victim repeatedly with a hammer, tied her to a bed, and sadistically assaulted her with her 22-month-old son in the room. The ordeal lasted 15 hours.
Investigators said they believed the attack was committed at random.
The woman’s son wasn’t physically injured, and his father told CTV News the boy had no memory of the incident a few weeks after it happened.
