Alcohol and speed are “strongly believed” to be factors in a frightening crash in Surrey that sent three people to hospital, including one man with serious head injuries.

Police believe the crash happened when a taxi travelling northbound on 124th Street was struck by a westbound Dodge Charger in the intersection at 64th Avenue at around 3:20 a.m. Saturday.

The force of the crash was so strong both vehicles ended up more than 60 metres from the intersection where they collided.

“The front-seat passenger was actually found wedged underneath the dashboard of the Dodge Charger and fire services had to extricate him,” said Cpl. Bryan Fedirchuk.

The passenger and driver in the Charger as well as the taxi driver were all taken to Royal Columbian Hospital. The passenger suffered serious head injuries while the driver was less severely hurt, and police say the cab driver’s injuries are believed to be serious.

The cab wasn’t carrying any passengers at the time of the crash.

Ferdirchuk said both alcohol and speed appear to have played a role in the crash.
