A 20-year-old man who was severely injured after a head-on collision with a marked RCMP cruiser in Agassiz, B.C. has died.

A junior Chilliwack RCMP officer crashed into a Ford Mustang last week, leaving the sedan's driver and passenger seriously wounded.

Both men were airlifted to hospital on the day of the accident, but the driver, Steve Genberg of Mission, succumbed to his injuries Monday.

"Most of the media and public have seen the two vehicles. You can see it was a devastating impact between them," said Const. Ian MacDonald of the Abbotsford Police Department, which is investigating the crash.

"I think if you look at the vehicles it's a miracle anyone walked away."

The B.C. Mountie involved in the accident was responding to a domestic dispute at the time of the car accident, which left him with a broken arm.

The Mustang's passenger was listed as in serious condition after the crash, but the 19-year-old has already been discharged from hospital.

Investigators haven't be able to determine whether the Mountie had turned on his siren and emergency lights at the time of the collision on the Lougheed Highway near Bodner Road.

The red Mustang appeared to be the front car of a convoy heading to Harrison Hot Springs at the time of the accident, MacDonald told ctvbc.ca.

Genberg worked as tow truck driver for Mission Auto Body, and had recently learned he was going to be a first-time father.
