A 33-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder for a stabbing rampage in East Vancouver that killed his mother and left his 19-month-old niece with “life-altering” injuries.

Ka Chi David Siu was shot by police Monday morning after officers arrived to an apartment building on Kingsway and 33rd Avenue to find “a man yelling and blood on the walls.” He allegedly confronted officers with a weapon.

Siu remains in hospital in stable condition under guard.

His mother, Yin Nor Hsao, 63, was found inside a suite suffering serious injuries but died shortly after. She was taking care of her toddler granddaughter at the time.

The toddler suffered stab wounds and was rushed to BC Children’s Hospital. She is expected to survive but the extent of her injuries still isn’t known.

Investigators believe mental health appears to be a factor in the case.

The Independent Investigations Office has taken over the probe into the incident.
