One of the two men charged with second-degree murder in connection with a deadly sword attack in East Vancouver has been granted bail.

Manraj Akalirai, 19, died in hospital after being attacked by a group of men brandishing bats, clubs and a sword in January.

Authorities said at the time Akalirai was found with “severe injuries believed to be caused by a sword,” but police haven’t officially confirmed which weapons were used in the attack.

Amritpal Dhillion was released on $450,000 bail Monday, with the condition that he must check in weekly with a supervisor.

Dhillion was ordered to live with his family and not have any weapons, nor use drugs or alcohol.

Amritpaul Rakhra faces one count of manslaughter in the deadly attack.

Akalirai’s death was the city’s first homicide of 2013.
