The son of two former B.C. politicians has been charged in connection with a home invasion and an assault outside a Victoria-area pub that left one man dead.

Greg Brotherston, the son of two former Highlands municipal councillors, has been charged with aggravated assault in connection with an attack on a 57-year-old man at a Colwood pub.

Police said Rick Green tried to intervene in a dispute between a man and a woman at the Country Rose Pub and was allegedly hit by Brotherston. Green later died in hospital.

Green’s family and friends have created a memorial for him at the pub where he was a regular.

“My dad was a really helpful person. He always had to help,” said Green’s son Kevin.

Police said Brotherston has also been charged with robbery and intent to commit assault after a 78-year-old man was robbed at his home.

Bill Corlett said a masked man entered his home on Oct. 6, held a knife to his throat and demanded his bank card PIN.

“I was sleeping and he just grabbed me, bent my head back and put a knife to my throat,” Corlett said.

Corlett gave him a fake pin number and the man fled.

“I can still feel the cut mark underneath the skin,” said victim Bill Corlett. “It’s healed up now but I can still feel it.”

Brotherston, his father and older brother were acquitted of second-degree murder in 2010 in connection with the death of a drug dealer.

The trio was arrested in June 2008 after the badly injured body of Keith Taylor was found dumped in a parking lot of the West Shore RCMP detachment.

During the trial, Crown said that Taylor was beaten at a home where cocaine was being sold. Lawyers said Taylor was trying to extort $100,000 from the Brotherston family.

The defence successfully argued Ken Brotherston Sr. was acting in self-defense against Taylor, who had a knife and gun during a fight.

Brotherston remains in custody.
