A newer-model Porsche has been impounded after it was driven onto a BC Ferries vessel Wednesday night and mysteriously abandoned on the vehicle deck.

The luxury car boarded a 7 p.m. sailing from Victoria to Tsawwassen, but when the ferry docked at the other side the sole occupant was nowhere to be found.

Ferries spokesman Darin Guenette said it’s not uncommon to find empty vehicles when vessels are preparing to unload, but the drivers are rarely hard to find.

“We make passenger announcements, the crews on the main car decks will be looking around to see if anybody looks lost,” Guenette said.

“We’re used to that, it does happen. But in this case the person just never showed up.”

Using surveillance cameras at the Victoria and Tsawwassen ferry terminals, staff were quickly able to identify the driver as a man in his 40s or 50s who had exited the ferry on foot and hopped onto a bus.

They also discovered the Porsche was uninsured.

“It was an unusual event,” Guenette said.

Delta police were called to investigate and the Porsche was impounded.

Const. Ciaran Feenan said it’s too early to speculate on why the car was left onboard, but officers are meeting with the driver on Thursday afternoon.

“We spoke to the owner last night who advised us that, simply, he misplaced his vehicle or didn’t know where he had left it on the ferry,” Feenan said.

Police said the man is facing possible Motor Vehicle Act offences, but no other charges at this time.
