Every Friday, Lynda Steele dips into the viewer mailbag to answer your questions. This week, Steele on Your Side investigates fees on mall gift cards and Facebook’s campaign to fight Ebola.

Gift card fees

Karen wrote CTV News to ask why her Willowbrook Mall gift card charged a $3 a month service fee.  She didn't know about the charge and ended up paying $46 in fees because she didn't use the gift card right away.

Gift cards and gift certificates sold in B.C. are not allowed to have expiry dates or feesexceptin certain circumstances. Mall cards are one of those exceptions. Because they can be used at multiple unaffiliated stores, they are allowed to include a service fee.  But the mall card must state those terms and conditions on the back of its card.

Facebook fights Ebola

Facebook has gotten in touch with CTV News to let us know about a new campaign to help in the fight against Ebola.

The social networking site is helping raise funds for international groups that are fighting the deadly disease.

Founder Mark Zuckerberg has personally donated $25 million to the cause. Now, he wants to make it easier for others to donate as well with a new donation button.

The money donated through Facebook will go to the International Medical Corps, The International Federation of Red Cross, Red Crescent Societies and Save the Children.
