A large fire gutted an abandoned home in Vancouver early Thursday morning.

Fire crews were called to 54th Avenue and McKinnon Street around 3 a.m.

By the time they arrived the home was fully engulfed in flames.

"Our first in crews they had flames about 20 feet in the air," said Vancouver Fire Batt. Chief Ken Abel. "It was impinging on the neighbour's home on the siding and caught a cedar tree on fire too."

The family living next door was asleep when the fire started.

"My window was open and I heard glass shattering and loud noises and I knew something wasn't right," said neighbour Scott Hodges. "I went into my son's room and the window is facing the house next door and it was all on fire so we got everyone out."

Fire crews say the abandoned home was already scheduled for demolition.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

No one was injured.
