A 30 metre section of wall fell from a Ladner recreation centre Thursday morning, forcing the evacuation of the building while crews assessed the damage.

An exterior east-facing portion of stucco façade broke off the Ladner Leisure Centre at around 10:30 a.m., leaving a significant chunk of wall missing, according to Delta’s chief administrative officer George Harvie.

The building is about 25 to 30 years old, according to Harvie, and the structural damage was likely caused by water and wind.

Nobody inside the building was injured and cars in the parking lot did not sustain any damage.

The weight room, fitness centre and ice arena at the centre remain closed until further notice as structural engineers work to assess the cause of damage and how to fix it.

The pool at the facility will stay open.
