Homicide investigators have been called to a trailer park fire outside Mission, B.C. that killed a woman and sent two children to hospital early Friday morning.

The blaze broke out around 3:15 a.m. and completely decimated a trailer on Hatzic Island, a small unincorporated community in the Fraser Valley.

A woman’s body was found inside after the flames were put out.

Her identity hasn’t been confirmed but neighbours said a mom and her two children lived in the trailer.

Leslie Luckerhoff, whose bedroom window looks out onto the home, said she woke up in the middle of the night and saw flames lighting up the park.

“I heard kids screaming,” Luckerhoff said. “A couple neighbours went behind my house and helped them get out.”

Witnesses said the children had their wrists bound with zap-straps when they were rescued. Both were taken to Mission Hospital, though the extent of their injuries is unclear.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is handling the case but has confirmed few details publicly. Sgt. Stephanie Ashton said police have identified a suspect and are trying to track him down.

The RCMP’s Air One helicopter was seen flying over the area on Friday afternoon.

Mounties said the incident appears targeted and the public is not believed to be at risk.
