Rescuers launched a helicopter to save an 63-year-old hiker who was injured on a North Shore mountain Sunday afternoon.

North Shore Rescue said the hiker had possibly injured his ankle after slipping at around 3 p.m.

He was airlifted off of Crown Mountain, near Grouse Mountain, just before dusk Sunday.

The man was treated by a North Shore Rescue physician after being returned to safety.

It was the second rescue in as many days on Crown Mountain, which rescuers describe as rugged, highly difficult terrain.

“In both circumstances, people were on the trail and unfortunately just slipped,” said Mike Danks, search manager for North Shore Rescue. “Things like this do happen, and what these guys did right was that they contacted us right away, and we were able to get them out before darkness.”

In both rescues, the hikers suffered only minor injuries, Dank said.

The weekend incidents serve as a reminder to the public that although it might feel like spring in Metro Vancouver, it’s still winter in the mountains.

“When the sun goes down it gets quite cold rapidly, and it’s below-freezing up there so we have mixed rain and snow,” Dank said. “People definitely need to be prepared for the conditions.”
