A 38-year-old man has been charged with the murder of his wife in Port Coquitlam, and will make his first court appearance Wednesday.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said Irinei Catalin Ghiorghita was taken into custody Tuesday after walking into the Coquitlam RCMP detachment “to advise the police that his wife was fatally wounded at their home.”

Police went to the home in the 2400-block of Davies Avenue and found an unresponsive woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and a shotgun was seized from the townhome.

He is now charged with one count of second-degree murder. The victim has been identified as his wife, 38-year-old Andra Ghiorghita.

IHIT says the suspect and victim were married and have a child together, although the youngster has been staying with family outside of Canada.

Anyone with information is being asked to call the IHIT tipline at 1-877-551-4448.
