Robotic lawn mowers are designed to be the kind of gardening tool you can set and forget, but they come with a hefty price tag.

The new Husqvarna Automowers have a movement pattern similar to a Roomba vacuum and promise to give users the perfect lawn without having to lift a finger. They range in size from 9kg to 13.9kg. The smallest Automowers are designed to cut less than half an acre of grass while the largest can cut more than an acre.

The GPS system on the mower creates a map of the lawn and the carbon steel blades cut the lawn in a random pattern from all directions. An electric wire fence keeps the mower inside a set boundary, and the user chooses the cutting frequency and height. The GPS system tracks which parts of the lawn have already been cut and then adjusts the mower’s movement pattern accordingly. The mower can be controlled from your phone, which includes programming the times you want it to trim your lawn.

“It knows where it’s going and it knows where it’s been,” said Bruce Bunn from Husqvarna Group.

If its battery is running low, the mower will return to its docking station. It also comes with an anti-theft device that sounds an alarm if it’s taken from the property.

The blades are designed to keep your lawn at a healthy height and they pivot away so hard objects don’t get caught in or damage the blades. If the mower comes across something unexpected, it stops moving.

The Automowers adjust their working time based on the growth rate of the lawn. If the weather is sunny or dry, the mower will spend less time working. This is meant to decrease the wear and tear on the device and the lawn itself. If the grass growth is strong, the mower will increase its mowing time.

The blades are located away from the outer edge of the mower, so if it comes across an object or obstacle in its path, it will stop and redirect itself. The blades shouldn’t hit the object since the mower should move away from it. If the mower is tipped over or comes off the ground, it automatically turns off. But children should still keep away from the devices, especially when they’re in motion.

But there’s a significant price tag for the convenience and advanced technology. The lowest priced model, the Husqvarna Automower 315, costs $2,199 and the 450X, the highest priced model, costs about $4,000.

But for those who would prefer to spend the summer admiring as opposed to mowing their lawns, it can be worth it.

“I haven't mowed my lawn yet this year,” said Bunn.
