Winter months can take a toll on car sales, but the auto market typically heats up in the spring. This year appears to be no exception, with discount offers and an increase in incentives; there are deals to be had if you know what to look for.

"This year is a perfect storm because the manufacturers made the same mistake as always and have overbuilt," said Phil Edmonston, author of the Lemon-Aid Guide, New and Used Cars and Trucks.

Edmonston says that at this time of year, the prices are going down, while the quality is going up.

"The vehicles are a little bit better built because the second series we're getting into during the months of March, April and May," he said.

Here’s a look at the vehicles that make the top of this year’s list, according to the Lemon-Aid Guide:

  • Small car: Honda Fit, Mazda 3
  • Big car: Honda Accord or Civic, Chevrolet Impala
  • Minivan: Honda & Toyota
  • SUV’s: GMC Terrain & Traverse

But before you start shopping at the dealership, make sure you do your own research. Some things to consider are:

  • Your space and storage needs
  • Ownership costs, like fuel economy and maintenance
  • Financing plans

It’s also important to know your vehicle’s price range before negotiating.

The best time to shop is a weekday, when it’s less busy. If you can, wait until the final days of the month for the best deals.

"Often there are hidden incentives for the dealership that encourage the dealership and the sales staff to try and hit sales numbers. They're going to be a little bit more open to negotiation," said Jeff Bartlett, Consumer Reports deputy auto editor.

A little research ahead of time can make the car buying experience a whole lot smoother.
