Update: The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of the victim as Damon William Campbell, 45, from Port Coquitlam.

Original story: B.C.’s homicide team and the province’s police watchdog have launched an investigation after a death inside a hotel in the resort city of Whistler.

Sgt. Stephanie Ashton said RCMP were first called to the hotel just after 3 a.m. Tuesday, and a man died as the result of an altercation.

A large police presence could be seen outside of the Aava Hotel in Whistler Village.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C., which conducts probes into officer-involved incidents, was contacted by Whistler RCMP and it is now conducting its own inquiry.

A spokesperson for IIOBC said that the man was found unresponsive in the hotel and in medical distress.

Despite administering first aid, he was pronounced dead in hospital.

“Given the attendance of police this set of circumstances warranted IIOBC notification,” a statement from the agency said.

IIOBC said investigators are probing a possible link between the man’s death and a police officer’s actions.

IHIT says there is no risk to the public and the incident does not appear targeted.

The victim's identity has not been released and it’s not known if a suspect is in custody.
