A 36-year-old man who was found dead on the bank of the Fraser River over the weekend was met with foul play, according to police.

The victim has been identified as Christian Klatt, a man with no fixed address who resided in New Westminster. Passersby discovered his body Saturday on a riverbank in the Sapperton Landing area, where investigators believe he’d been living in a makeshift camp.

An autopsy was performed and the results, along with evidence officers gathered at the scene, led police to determine foul play was a factor in Klatt’s death.

His family has been notified.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team announced Tuesday it has taken conduct of the case and is working with New Westminster police to identify witnesses and persons of interest. The motive has not been determined.

Anyone with information on the homicide is asked to call the IHIT tip line at 1-877-551-4448, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 if they wish to remain anonymous.
