Every Friday, Lynda Steele dips into the viewer mailbag to answer your questions. This week, Steele on Your Side investigates Aeroplan fees and problems with ATMs in Mexico.

Aeroplan fees and surcharges

Keith wrote Steele on Your Side after trying to book a flight. It cost 60,000 Aeroplan points plus fees and taxes of $1,351. But when he checked Air Canada's website, the same flight only showed fees of $487. He wants to know why there is a difference in fee.

Aeroplan insists the taxes, fees and surcharges are exactly the same in both cases. For Keith's flight, the fees add up to $679 per passenger. But Air Canada rolls the base fare and surcharge into one amount on a single line.

If a customer clicks on "details" you can see the surcharges broken down and you'll find it equals the same amount as the Aeroplan redemption ticket.

ATM issues

Calvin wrote CTV News after having problems with an HSBC ATM while on holidays in Mexico. He says he went to make a withdrawal from his account, but the machine didn't dispense any money, even though his account was debited.

HSBC says there was a system error in late October and 225 international users were affected. HSBC clients that were impacted were immediately refunded the money, but in Calvin's case, he was a Scotiabank client.

The good news is the error is fixed and Calvin was reimbursed his money.

If a customer is having issues accessing funds at an HSBC ATM in Mexico, they should call the number on the back of their debit card for assistance.
